Kurt must be proud
Blessed
are the people of Leblon, for Kurt lives among them. We’re talking, of
course, about Kurt, the famous pastry shop on Rua General Urquiza, who’s
been pleasing the palates of cariocas for decades. Kurt himself passed
away 2 years ago, but besides his little piece of sugar-addicting heaven
on Earth, he left 2 grandsons, Alan and Dany, who certainly make Grandpa
very proud.
In 1994 Alan and Dany teamed up and created The Bakers, in Copacabana,
at Rua Santa Clara 86. “The most elegant pastry shop in Rio”, “An oasis
for snacks”, were some of the comments back then. In 1998 the two
brothers opened their first branch, in Centro (Rua do Ouvidor 140),
catering to the hurried executives who can appreciate a healthy and
tasty meal. The Centro shop also innovated by introducing the afternoon
tea, served from 4:15 to 7:30 pm. And finally, last year, The Bakers
conquered Barra, by opening a shop at Barrashopping, from which they
deliver 7 days a week.
Enough background! What makes The Bakers so good? First, the sweets. And
their names are self-explanatory: Cappuccino cake (R$3.50), Charlotte (R$3.00)
– in strawberry, chocolate or apricot flavor – and an excellent
cheesecake (R$3.50). If you can resist that, then we invite you to try
their assortment of salads, which come in pretty large portions: Caprese
(R$10.90), Italy (R$9.50) – diced eggplant, fresh tomatoes, mozzarella,
and grated parmesan cheese – and Central Park (R$10.90) – dry tomatoes,
cherry tomatoes, American lettuce, and black olives – are some of our
favorites.
If there’s still room, complete your meal with a sandwich. Among the 8
choices, we selected two: Al Pacino (R$7.90) – Parma ham, mozzarella,
dry tomatoes under a Mediterranean sauce in a ciabatta bread – and Honey
Chicken (R$7.90) – grilled chicken breast and seasoned Ementhal cheese
with honey mustard dressing, tomatoes in a ciabatta bread.
If you go to the BarraShopping Bakers, take your time and enjoy the
continuous and soothing classical music and order a double cappuccino or
a mocha coffee. And thank Kurt for passing on his mastery to Alan and
Dany.
